The great thing about working for a telecom like I do is that I get to see the bastard children of mobile phone companies and everything else. In this case, Sony Ericsson and Sony PlayStation.

It. Is. ALIVE! Mwahahaha!

There has been a lot of talk about mobile phone gaming a la iPhone apps, but this is something new all together. The Xperia Play is the first PlayStation-approved phone and features a slide out game pad complete with touch sensitive joysticks. It comes with pre-loaded games such as The Sims 3 and a Bruce Lee game, and Notch of Minecraft brilliance has announced that his baby will be hitting the phone up soon, too! (Horrah, two games I’m entirely addicted to available in one small hit.)

The beauty of something like this though is that it’s also running Google’s delicious Android Gingerbread operating system. Android is popular today with smart phone users who want to get more functionality than iPhone users but still have a slim line, easy to use phone.

While it hasn’t taken off just yet, the idea has been launched and a benchmark has been set. It will be interesting to see what innovations will be made to successor and competing phones.
