EA Named Worst Company in America… Again.
EA hasn’t had the best start to the year and it’s just getting worse. For the second year in a row, Consumerist have named EA “Worst Company in America” according to the voters. But, in light of all the problems that America has faced in the last few years, are EA *really* the worst company in America or are gamers a loud minority with out perspective?
When Peter Moore heard the news, he published a letter which, in my honest opinion, sums the situation up quite clearly.
[sic] And it comes to mind again this week as we get deeper into the brackets of an annual Web poll to name the “Worst Company in America.”
This is the same poll that last year judged us as worse than companies responsible for the biggest oil spills in history, the mortgage crisis, and bank bailouts that cost millions of taxpayers dollars. The complaints against us last year were our support for SOPA (not true), and that they didn’t like the ending to Mass Effect 3.
It says it all right there, doesn’t it? Moore continues the letter to say that his company out-voted a company that conspired to water down beer but that discussion takes place in bars while EA’s audience is primarily on the Internet.
So, let’s have a discussion Internet. You and me. Right now.
In the grand scheme of this little thing called Life, video games are a small blip on the radar. While you were voting for EA to win this award because they released SimCity and under-estimated the support it needed for launch, people who had lost their homes because of the Bank of America didn’t even have enough money to buy groceries, let alone a luxury like SimCity.
While you were voting for EA to win Worst Company, people were out trying to repair damage to an ecosystem that had been destroyed by an oil spill by a faceless company while you were complaining about how Mass Effect 3 ended.
EA have done some pretty poorly planned things in their time and I’m not denying that fact at all. I’m in agreement that they should be held accountable for their mistakes as anyone should be but people… For the LOVE of God, some perspective would be nice. Compared to the companies that have caused real heartache and pain to people, EA are a beautiful, gleaming beacon amongst the oil, scum and dirt that filters in around them.
